WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Hannah Block Historic USO Building in downtown Wilmington is celebrating it’s 70th anniversary this year. The World War II building on Second and Orange Streets has been open since December 1941 and still offers the same charm of years past. Event organizers say the building is special to Wilmington’s heritage and would not still be open without the corporation of the entire community.
“There are only about five of this type of World War II USO buildings still standing,” said USO representative Wilbur Jones. “Because of the wonderful relationship that our preservationist have had with the city of Wilmington and the city council and government, we’ve been able to preserve it.”
Jones says the USO building’s renovations have allowed a piece of history to survive which provides a perfect venue for almost any occasion.
