WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– UNCW righthanded pitcher Justin Livengood (Winston-Salem, N.C./Ledford) became the program’s 88th player all-time, to be drafted or sign as a free agent on Friday, as the San Diego Padres selected him with the 298th overall pick (10th round ) in the of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. “I want to thank the Padres organization for selecting me and I’d also like to thank my coaches and teammates at UNCW,” said Livengood on Friday. “My time in the program has been a very special part of my life, one that I wouldn’t give up for anything in the world. UNCW is a special place.” Livengood, who joined the program as a walk-on in 2012, posted a record of 1-3 in a career-high 29 appearances while posting an earned run average of 2.94 and limiting opponents to a .219 batting average in 2013. In 33.2 innings, the hard-throwing reliever fanned 48 batters, averaging 12.83 strikeouts per nine innings.
As a junior, Livengood totaled just eight innings over nine relief appearances before corralling his talent and exploding onto the draft scene with his fastball and breaking ball as a senior.
The draft concludes on Saturday with rounds 11 through 40 being conducted.
Notes on the draft:
