WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After nearly eight months of negotiating, food truck owners will now have an easier time making money.
Tuesday city leaders met to discuss a number of issues and even loosened food truck regulations.
Back in July, the Planning Commission approved rules and regulations for food trucks that want to operate within the city.
After months of back-and-forth with city leaders, City Council voted unanimously to approve need food truck rules.
Before food truck owners were required to apply for special use permits, but they could only apply every 45 days.
The new rules would allow owners to apply for annual permits that outline exactly where and when they can operate and for how long they can stay in one location. Now food truck owners can get an annual permit and operate in all nonresidential districts from 6 a.m. to 3 a.m.
James Smith owns the Patty Wagon. He spent several months working with downtown restaurant owners to reach a deal that worked best for both sides.
“I’m relieved,” Smith said. “I’m glad City Council approved it. It looks like all the talks I had with the downtown restaurants came to a good positive ending that works best for everybody.”
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, council finalized a rezoning that allows a massive mixed-use project on South 17th Street. Barclay West will be built on 300 acres on the north and south sides of Independence Blvd. between South 17th Street and Carolina Beach Road.
Cameron Properties Limited Partnership owns the land. Developers say they plan to build apartments, offices and businesses on the land.
A spokesperson for Cameron Properties says the new development is a 25- to 30-year project.
