WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are trying to figure out if multiple shootings this weekend are connected.

The first shooting in Forest Hills Saturday left a teenager dead. Now police think most of the shootings are gang related.

Police responded to Forest Hills Drive Saturday evening after residents reported hearing several gunshots. Officers found Joseph David Williams, 18, lying in the street dead of a gunshot wound to the back. Police say Williams was riding on the back of a moped with Mark Richie, Jr., 18, when the shooting happened.

Witnesses told police that a grey Honda coupe was following with a passenger firing shots at the two teens.

There have been more shootings since.

Police responded to reports of shots fired near the 900 block of N. 30th Street and Emory Street Sunday night. One witness reported seeing a silver Honda body style car in the area. That matches the description of the car wanted in connection with Saturday’s shooting death on Forest Hills Drive.

Early this morning, police say someone fired into a home on Evans Street.

Then officers responded to another shooting at a house at 823 S. 6th Street.

As police searched for suspects, an officer saw a suspicious vehicle near 19th Street and Queen Street that accelerated toward an officer before eventually wrecking near the scene.

Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous says the violence has gone up because of a power struggle between gangs.

“We have recently arrested some high level gang members, gang leaders,” Evangelous said. “We believe that has created a void in local gangs.”

Evangelous says police are actively working to dismantle these gangs, but change won’t happen overnight.

R.I.P JD. I miss that beautiful smile. Still not sure why someone would take your life just like that. My heart is hurting I just talked to you last week & a few days later you are gone. Praying for the Williams family. Lord I pray that they arrest whoever did this. I can’t think of any reason why someone would do such a thing to you. You were loved by many. R.I.P JD

I agree this has been going on for decades. But his lordship Obummer is the reigning leader of failed social engineering that the liberals crave.

  • ohreally says:

Gun buy backs are worthless and waste tax payer $$. We need due diligence and constant sweep of high risk areas. Bad guys don’t hang around where there’s attention to detail, arrests, and (frankly) citizens armed to defend themselves. MS 13 and the others can be run out of town…just need some commitment by our elected officials (and their feet held to the fire by those that put them there).

  • ohreally says:

No kidding. “They” is “Us” the never ending tax payer.

  • Guest Reply Redux says:

Try for once…looking within your own local law enforcement protection program…and quit blaming everything from bad weather to local gangs on the Presidency. Or is that too much to educate yourself within????
BTW…tomorrow ends the “Ceasefire” program in Wilmington…so prepare yourselves.
Can’t wait to see the “Stats” on that program.
    Yeah…right!

I don’t recall reading about any “high level” gang members or gang leaders being arrested. He certainly didn’t hold a press conference touting these arrests. The last press conference I saw was him asking the public for help.

I was out of town over the weekend. Do you suppose my guns left the vault and went to Wilmington? They were in the vault when I checked today. Oh, if I had only sold them back. Countless lives would have been saved. I think I will sell all my silverware and put an end to obesity. Maybe if I take all my pens and pencils away from my grand-daughter she will stop misspelling words at schools.
NOTE TO ALL THE PASTORS INVOLVED IN THE “CEASE FIRE”: You have a lot of work to do. Too bad the people in the neighborhoods haven’t had their fill of the shooting, killing and wounding of their neighbors.

  • Erlkoenig says:

There is a parental Leadership void. How is that Obamunism working out for your people NAACP?

  • antithug says:

As long as they keep killing each other, let’s give them better guns so they can be more effective.

  • ENL says:

I think Deb Butler should take her magical vaginal wand and spread peace and happiness throughout the inner city.

  • Guest8888888 says:

It was nice to see her not looking so angry for a change.

  • beach guy says:

Hey local law enforcement if it is gang related is this not a job of federal law enforcement like the FBI if these folks are in organized crime syndicates then we need to have FBI surveillance ect in place and scoop these perpetrators up for firearms violations drug trafficking so on and so forth and send them to federal court with minimum sentencing in place.
The Federal Government will act if the outcry is loud enough.
Please do not wait until innocents are gunned down in the cross fire like what is happening in Chicago.

  • guesty says:

He said the increase in crime was due to the “crooks are getting a jump on the Christmas rush.”

    Thug shopping spree?

  • GuestLOL says:

    Best Comment Ever!!

  • Burgerboy says:

They should start a midnight bakkaball league and have gun buy-back programs EVERY WEEKEND and open some new businesses down town to encourage growth and prosperity amongst the gang-banging youths that feel trapped and helpless in society, if jamal is working at the KFC then he won’t be out shooting people, ha!

  • Guest 1492 says:

    * Right: Parental leadership void
    * Wrong: Blaming Obama. This void’s been around a lot longer than Obama.

That’s the trouble with being an extremist; you lose the ability to see the entire issue in a realistic way.

  • Guest 10101 says:

Probably less of a shopping spree and more of a really moronic thing to say by our local police chief.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; Evangelous is in way over his ability to deal with things around here. Time for a change.

  • guesty says:

And which pot of unending wealth should be used to pay for a midnight ‘bakkaball’ league and gun buy backs?

  • Guest123123 says:

Maybe the bike patrol officer’s can stop writing seat belt tickets on front st and start doing some real police work.

  • WilmMan says:

Are you still crying….pay your ticket, get over it, and next time put on your seatbelt.

  • GuestT says:

Maybe you can wear your seat belt.

  • Guesthey says:

You got pulled over by a bike patrol officer? LOL

  • KEN FORTIER says:

Maybe you should where your belt when you drive your car, as the law states? Don’t blame officer for doing his job!

  • Guest611 says:

Let me call the waaaaaaaambulance. Put on your big boy panties (and your seatbelt) and get over it.

  • Guest4455 says:

    Get over it already

  • guesty says:

Ralphie said crime was down. Maybe he was talking about the criminals within his own department.

  • PublicAvenger says:

Is it the fault, of the WPD, that $40 Million in Housing Authority money, is being used, rebuild, and increase Creekwood. Or that over $60 million is given out in welfare, paying 16 years olds to have out-of-wedlock, babies ? Then we get mad at the police, when some drug dealing, gangster gets shot, on a moped. Hey, lets stop creating (funding) the environment, that breeds this insanity, and violence.

  • Common Sense says:

All of these shootings are typically committed by the same race in the same neighborhoods.

  • Morty Sussman says:

When Obama bans all the guns there will be no more violent crimes. The gang thugs will just shrug and get jobs as Obamacare ambassadors. I know this is the case because Obama whined about guns in his umpteenth speech about crime, blaming the NRA, the Constitution, white people clinging to Bibles, and green Martians for all the crime in his hometown. LBJ’s “great society” creating generational welfare and ghetto handout mentality has nothing to do with it, its gotta be the guns.

  • Guest_rhetoric says:

I’m a pretty conservative guy, certainly not a fan of most social welfare policies, but maaaannnnn that honestly sounds like it came from a script prepared by Limbaugh. It’s got all the buzzwords in place, but what is your actual input?

This kind of commentary serves no purpose and does nothing to further our agenda. Instead, it makes us seem like ignorant, rhetoric spewing broken records. If all you have to say is a regurgitation of what you heard on talk radio this morning then keep it to yourself – you are the intellectual counterpart of the people commenting to defend criminals in text message language. Sure you may have a better grasp of the English language, but your messages have about the same amount of substance.

  • Guest3293 says:

If these thugs were forced to keep a full time job….they would be too tired to loaf the streets shooting all hours of the night.

When will the lawmakers of our nation wake up and realize there is surely something wrong with this picture?

  • guesty says:

…and pander to them for votes. Vote for me and I’ll give you a phone and extend your benefits for life. Have more children you can’t afford, no problem, we’ll give you a raise in benefits. Just remember who to vote for next election.

  • GuestMan. says:

I told everyone on not to respond to this guy, that he is either a troll or a moron. Remember to never argue with an idiot; you can’t win and it makes you look stupid. Just let him spout his crap and leave him alone.
He has even started typing in all caps now.

  • Guest 10101 says:

… you don’t really have any opinions of your own. You just keep regurgitating the mindless extremist-speak you hear from other nutbags.

By the way, don’t worry about being silenced; regurgitate all you want. The rest of us really don’t pay much attention to it anyway. Once in a while we stop by for a laugh (yep, we’re laughing at ya and not with ya). The rest of the time we have better things to do.

  • Morty Sussman says:

You liberal stooges always pretend to be conservatives while trying to stifle the true voices of Conservatism! Keep your thought police tactics to yourself, I WILL NOT BE SILENCED BY THE LIKES OF YOU. YOU DO NOT DICTATE MY OPINIONS.

  • Guesteeeeee555 says:

The instant I read “I’m a pretty conservative guy, but,” I knew the Media Matters/HuffPo type trolls arrived pretending to be conservatives. To ice the cake, he/she said in a later post: “you don’t really have any opinions of your own. You just keep regurgitating the mindless extremist-speak you hear from other nutbags.” This stuff is often scripted for them by various leftist web sites whose legions then march out to troll social media. All the while, ironically accusing conservatives of not having opinions of their own.

  • Johnny black says:

I think the WPD should give Creekwood residents red jump suits and Hillcrest residents blue jump suits, then hand out the guns that were turned in a few weeks ago at the buy back and have a civil war reinactment with live ammo at greenfield lake

  • Guest0101 says:

That, my friend, is a fantastic idea!

  • come.on.now says:

Everything is handed to them, and they got all this free time, to be running the streets, shooting and killing each other. They got a better cell phone, cable, free food, then most who work for a living.

  • Guestomfg says:

Their “leaders” are in jail so they have no guidance. Thats hysterical. These thuggers are nothing but trash, stick them all in a cage with knives.

  • Guest Reply Redux says:

“WPD: Void in gang leadership behind rash of violence”….

  • Guest123123 says:

Everyone on here thinks Im crazy. I do not care about the ticket or the money. The fact it was not a regular vehicle stop for some other traffic violation or a Click it and ticket. It was A DAMN BIKE PATROL standing on the side of the road talking to some chicks!
