DURHAM, N.C. (AP) – The State Bureau of Investigation is joining law enforcement officials in Durham following the death of a teenager inside of a patrol car.
A statement from the Durham Police Department said an officer was taking 17-year-old Jesus Huerta to headquarters Tuesday morning to pick up a warrant charging him with second-degree trespassing.
Police said Huerta was in the back seat of the patrol car when there was a loud noise as the patrol car reached headquarters. The officer jumped from the car, which rolled into a van.
Officer Samuel Duncan has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the investigation. Duncan joined the force in July 2012.
