OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — What was in the sky over Ocean Isle Beach this weekend?

“I thought that’s a strange light. Maybe it’s a helicopter light, and I was watching them go, and they sorta did like a half circle,” said Woozy Dell, who is vacationing for the week out on Ocean Isle Beach. “And then I saw another one come, and then I thought this is bizarre, and it got a little interesting.”

What she says she saw were a series of dots in the sky. They appeared to be glowing orbs, changing in color and multiplying in number.

“So I saw two, and then I started seeing three, and then I started seeing four, and then I started counting them, because I thought, ‘My gosh. What is this?” Dell said. “What I saw was an orangish red, and when it went back around it was white.”

She saw it all late Saturday night. She said it lasted just 17 minutes.

“It was in the sky, and then went away, and it was, the lights, were so unusual that it was something you don’t forget,” Dell said.

We got an e-mail from someone in Wilmington seeing strange lights in the Wrightsville Beach sky, too, that night. Problem is no one knows what it was.

“I have to admit,” Dell laughed, “I did go out the next night looking. And tonight looks like a clear night, so…”

Maybe the ones that do come forward really are the “special” ones.

  • Pamela Conley says:

The multiple lights are nothing new as I have seen them also.We lived at the beach for many years and there has always been the “Orange Orb’s” with color change to white and sometimes red and blue.Good work Dell for stating what you saw. What a shame most people are too afraid of riducule to step forward and speak from the heart. Maybe the ones that do have sightings and come forward are the special ones? How can hundreds of sightings be false?

  • Bob Ponzoni says:

Looking south from the north end of Carolina Beach toward the Tiki Bar pier. About 11 PM. I saw an orange orb over the ocean and much too high above the horizon to be a boat. I watched it in a clear sky for several minutes when it split into two. Completely stationary One abruptly faded out and the second remained for quite some time and then also faded and was gone. Distance of a mile or so away I’m guessing. Seems people see odd things here often but most people don’t report sightings. I am curious and will keep looking.

  • OIBguest says:

My family was vacationing in OIB in June of last year. We were out walking one night and saw something similar. Along with the orbs there were random flashes of lights in the sky.

  • Rebel With a Cause says:

Probably Yankee drones scoping out the area with infrared cameras. Probably plan to move here and try to make it like the place they ran away from.

  • Tim says:

4 white dots flying in formation with 4 bright flares released one right after the other. Just looked like military aircraft doing exercises to me. Cool to see, but far from little green men vacationing on the NC coast. :-)

  • F-15 Pilot says:

I can tell you we don’t have Red flares. Ours just like every nation I have seen are bright white and fall at a 82 to 86 degree angle. And come out at 6 to 9 each burst. The other fact is, if you see us especially over the ocean you for sure hear us. As a pilot flying the best fighter in the world I can tell you. We have seen very strange things up there with us! I’m not saying “little green men” but I am saying UFOs.. Because we don’t know what they are or who they belong to.
While stationed at Hurlbert Field near Gulf Breeze Fla. I can tell you it’s an almost every mission occurrence. It’s normal AAR talk after landing and post flight talk. The Navy Pilots say the same thing at Pensacola Air Station 40 miles from us. I am just saying those are not aircraft chaff and flare.
I have seen the often too. No clue what they are.

My family saw them last night and the night before at the west end of OIB! Last night they started out as a group of five white lights. It was very clear outside and they were moving up the coast about 1/4 mile out. We were all shocked and said oh my god those are UFO’s. Then all the sudden one of them turned bright orange and it seemed to shine into our eyes. Then the other four lit up the same way in sequence. They stayed lit for about ten seconds then all turned back to the smaller white lights. They changed course again and headed out to sea. I grabbed my phone from inside and attempted to film then but by that time they were to far out and camera didn’t pick them up. Both nights it occurred around 10:30pm so grab your cameras tonight!

  • Ron Sprenkle says:

I was visiting Holden Beach in Sep 2012. One night sitting on my deck, I saw orange orbs over the ocean. After a period of about five minutes, they instantly vanished.

  • Eloise Wright says:

Went to the East end of the Beach about 10 PM. A pattern of orbs in color of yellowish and reddish lights out over the ocean (not towards one of the Islands). They started moving back and forth and appeared to be 3 in an angle then 2 more side by side and they were moving in a similar manner one side and the other across from one another. They suddenly disappeared and then several minutes later reappeared to very similar quick movements and once again disappeared! We watched for awhile after but, they didn’t return. So, I came home and looked on the internet to see if anyone else reported seeing this and lo and behold, there have been many recent reports such as this. How can anyone doubt this sort of incident?

its trash bags they send them up useing a fire in the middle of the bags . they last about 10 mins before the light in them goes out. saw them sending them up at north m beach 2 weeks ago .they do look like ufos but there just hot air balloon trash bags . you can see them for miles and miles. wway is sliping

  • Machiavel says:

If you mean less racist and redneck, with restaurants that are actually good….then yes.

  • Ben says:

Def not paper lanterns aka trash bags. They did not flicker. They were under some sort of powered control. Candle flames look nothing like an orange spotlight . They were waaaay to big as we’ll.

  • Amused says:

Can an infrared camera even pick up a heat image on someone that moves that slow?

Make it like the place they ran away from? You might be right. Of course that would mean that the place they ran away from looked just like the drone-advocating Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department.

  • Anon!miss says:

I saw these last summer and recently. I have personally released the orbs lit with fire and they have NEVER looked like what I saw in the sky those nights. It started as three red lights that seemed to be orbiting around and around as the lights would disappear, then reappear when finally it seemed to jolt out of the sky disappearing for good. I am confident these were ufos.

  • Wilmington lifer says:

I’m from Wilmington so are my parents and grand parents. We have seen those type things over Masonboro Beach as long as I remember. My grandparents use to talk about seeing that stuff over the ocean all the time. That was prior to airplanes being around. We all use to sit on the porch as a youngster and all of us would watch them change colors and get pretty close to the waterway. But wouldn’t make a sound.
There is actually a letter written around 1866 by folks down here talking of Northern soldiers seeing them 7 months after Fort Fisher battle.
Nothing new to us. We just don’t talk of it much because folks are so much smarter now. Haha! Sarcasm!

  • Diana P. says:

Hi Wilmington Lifer, would you know where the letter you refer to might be? I am a local historian and that sounds like an interesting source.

  • Joshua says:

Tuesday 11/11/14 10:55p: I witnessed a UFO on my way to work, go behind the woods on MLK Jr Highway by the airport. I almost dismissed it as a plane but noticed that this object was circular shaped with multi-colored LED flashing lights all around it. Right now you can go to MLK Jr and see that these lights are still flashing behind the woods. I don’t know if there’s new plane tech being tested or what. This is not a military airspace territory so that theory doesn’t seem too plausible. If you’re on this site and live in Wilmington NC and witnessed anything please repost it so I know I’m not nuts. it’s now 11:23p.

  • Heimie Schmelter says:

…out what the problem is. I was there and saw nothing of the like. Would that be Pecans or Pistachios?

  • ClemsonBemson says:

Most a them space people don’t use LEDs no more cause theyre now using them POLYCARBON ones to save on that electron fuel when theyre flying.

If you done seen LEDs on this here ship then its from Uranus cause theyre always a little behind.

Thank you for wasting 30 seconds of my life. Aspirations to become the National Inquirer?

  • Giant Tool says:

The only 40 secs you wasted was the time it took you to write this comment.

  • HumTeeDumbTee says:

I wasted 60 seconds because I read it twice. :-)

  • Guest Reply Redux says:

Don’t be despaired…they are just trying to draw tourist there like in “Close Encounters of the Ocean Isle Kind”

  • Guest Reply Redux says:

But in reality…the UFO’s were simply the Film Industry’s movers, moving equipment outta NC *asap* into South Carolina…paid for by South Carolina.
    UFO = “U’re Filming’s OUT!”

  • Guest2020 says:

Regardless of what caused the strange lights, this is technically a UFO because it has not been identified. I wonder if they could have been seen from Sunset Beach.

  • Linda Purcell says:

I have also seen these orange lights in the sky. It was July 4th when I noticed them over Holden Beach. In talking with a friend they also saw these lights. I’ve researched this and there have been sightings all across North Carolina – but no explanation so far!

  • tomm says:

Linda, the orange lights that you saw drifting over Holden Beach during the July 4th weekend were mostly likely Chinese lanterns. My neighbors here in HB lit and released several of them that weekend. They do look very strange from a distance if you don’t realize what you’re looking at.

  • Barry says:

    Beam me up Scotty!!!!

  • John says:

A friend and I saw something similar last spring or last fall one night while sitting on his porch at Sunset Beach. The lights appeared to be just off shore in front of Bird Island or Little River Inlet. At first I thought maybe boaters were off shore shining lights up into the sky and they were hitting fog or clouds. But, they didn’t really ‘behave’ like that and it was a pretty clear night. It didn’t really look like search lights from boats that I’ve watched at night in the past. I have never seen the Brown Mountain lights but wondered if it was the same phenomenon which I speculate to be some sort of phosphorescent gas rising up from mother earth. Way weird.

  • mohican says:

I live on the icww in wilmington & see those lights frequently offshore. They look like flares except they don’t have trails up and they don’t flame out. They stay lit for a while. Sometimes you see just one and sometimes you see a cluster. I have called the coast guard just in case they were flares and they said it is some kind of military training and not to worry about it. Very strange lights for sure. They are not planes or helicopters

  • 1492 says:

Perhaps Ms. Dell just feeling a bit Woozy. A lot of people see lights when than happens.
