2 arrested in church embezzlement investigation

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — According to the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office, two were women were arrested for embezzlement of funds from Mt. Pisgah Church on Harrelson Road.  The investigation began in January when church members reported funds missing from the church’s bank accounts.

Then minister Retonya Judtha Freeman, 38, and treasurer Agnes Jeanette McCall, 59, have been charged in relation to the crime.

The Sheriff’s Office said their investigation showed money was withdrawn from church bank accounts starting in 2009 and continuing through 2013.

Sheriff Jim McVicker said funds totaling over $70,000.00 were embezzled from the church coffers during that time.

Both suspects were arrested on Wednesday, June 10th. Freeman was charged with 7 counts of embezzlement and given a $36,000.00 secured bond. McCall was charged with 5 counts of embezzlement and 3 counts of accessory before the fact to a felony. McCall received a $29,000.00 secured bond.

“Cases like this are hard for a congregation who has put their trust in these individuals,” said McVicker. “Too many times these type cases go unreported out of embarrassment or fear of adverse publicity for the church. I am glad this church came forward to report this crime and work with us to find the proof of this act and hopefully find justice.”

Both individuals have made bond and were scheduled to appear in district court today.
