New officer: ‘I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the world’

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several new officers officially joined the Wilmington Police Department Friday.

During a swearing-in ceremony at the Wilmington City Council chambers in downtown Wilmington, 14 officers were sworn in.

Sworn-in Officer Jameson Hutchins said it was an emotional moment that took two years of hard work to earn.

“I’ve wanted to be an officer all my life. I’ve always wanted to make a difference in the world and in my community,” Hutchins said. “I think that if you want to make a difference in the world, you got to start locally. I think Wilmington is a great place to live, and a great place to be an officer and I cannot wait to hit the street.”

The families of all of the officers were there in support. Wilmington, New Hanover County, and state officials were also there to congratulate the new officers.

North Carolina’s Attorney General Roy Cooper was the guest speaker. Justice Paul Newby of the North Carolina Supreme Court offered the oath of office.
