‘I am here to continue her legacy’: Sister takes over Helping Hands of the Cape Fear
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– Helping Hands of the Cape Fear is entering a new chapter under the leadership of its new president, Zanika Stokely.
The nonprofit, which provides temporary housing for people experiencing homelessness who are recovering from illness or hospitalization, was founded by Zanika’s sister, Jamie Stokely. Jamie died unexpectedly in October 2025 at the age of 40.
As Helping Hands marked the transition with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Zanika Stokely said she is committed to continuing the mission her sister started.
“I am truly honored to continue the work of my sister,” Stokely said.
Following Jamie’s death, some community members worried whether the organization would continue without its founder. Stokely said those concerns only strengthened the organization’s resolve.
“I wanted to have an opportunity to actually show the public today that we are still up and running,” she said. “I am here to continue her legacy.”
The ceremony brought together staff, supporters, community members and Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo, who praised the nonprofit’s impact on some of the area’s most vulnerable residents.
“You are all playing very important roles because these people have no place to go if it wasn’t for you folks,” Saffo said. “On behalf of the city, thank you for this beautiful service.”
Michelle Reed, an administrative assistant with Helping Hands of the Cape Fear, said she has been inspired by Stokely’s leadership and determination during a difficult transition.
“Watching her transition into that role and being brave enough to continue what her sister started has been amazing,” Reed said. “She learned so much over the years.”
Reed said she believes Jamie would be proud to see how her sister has stepped forward to lead the organization.
“She can know that her business is being very well taken care of,” Reed said. “Her sister has stepped into her shoes and walked in them. She’s doing well.”
Zanika says plans for growth and expansion are already underway.
