Last Thursday Mrs. Rondinaro and I were meeting with potential sponsors of the Cape Fear Italian Festival.
On Friday we were on our way to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games… a celebration of all things Scottish.
What a country!
By virtue of marriage, I’m a card carrying member of the Clan MacDougall.
Actually we don’t have cards.
But we do have kilts… lots of kilts.
I find it quite amusing that this Italian guy is part of the clan but these Scots are a welcoming lot.
It’s a proud and fascinating history that I now indirectly share.
Some day I’ll tell you a story about the Broach of Lorn, Robert the Bruce, and the Clan MacDougall.
While I don’t have the legs for a kilt I have grown rather fond of bag pipe bands and I’m even acquiring a taste for haggis.
Trust me, you’re much better off if I don’t tell what that’s made of.
Mrs. Rondinaro and I especially enjoy "Cousin William", my favorite non-blood relative.
That’s the way this clan thing works.
I paid only passing attention to all of that Scottish stuff for almost all of the years we lived in the North Carolina mountains, until Tammy connected with her clan.
Her mom was a MacDougall.
As a result, I’ve learned much about an entirely different culture and it’s part in helping to form the United States of America.
This country really is a fascinating mixed-up patchwork of people.
It’s part of what makes us a great nation.
So says Steve Rondinaro of the Clan MacDougall.
