WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington women’s basketball coach Ann Hancock has announced the signing of Brittany Gamby (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) and Mya Levels (Diamond, Ohio/Southeast) to National Letters-of-intent during the early signing period. The duo will join the Seahawks women’s basketball program as freshmen for the 2009-10 season. “We are excited about the additions of Brittany and Mya to our program,” said Hancock. “Both players will give us more depth in positions where we need it and they will compliment our returning players. They will also benefit from the tremendous leadership that we have in place within the program.” A First-Team Ohio Capital Conference selection as a junior, Gamby has led Pickerington to an undefeated record in OCC play and conference championships in each of her three seasons with the Panthers program. Gamby was a Second-Team Ohio Capital Conference honoree following her sophomore season when she guided Pickerington to an appearance in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Final Four. The school’s single-game record holder for most three-point baskets (6), Gamby also plays golf and softball at Pickerington and will become the first athlete in school history to earn 12 varsity letters during her prep career. “Brittany comes from a great program and has a competitive desire that is second to none,” said Hancock. “She is a versatile player who understands the game and plays with a remarkable amount of patience and control. Brittany has the ability to shoot from the outside and will give us another option from the perimeter. She is a complete player who does so many things well that it is hard to take her off the floor.” Ranked #53 in the nation among forwards in the 2009 recruiting class by Scouts, Inc., Levels averaged 17.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game last season in leading Southeast to 21 consecutive wins, an undefeated regular season and a No. 2 ranking in the AP Division II state poll. The 2007-08 Portage Trail Conference Player-of-the-Year, Levels has helped the Pirates to three straight PTC championships. A First-Team Tri-County selection and special mention All-Ohio honoree as a junior, Levels took part in the Ohio Varsity Sports 2008 Summer Showcase and the Ohio Girls Basketball Report Top 64 showcase this past summer. She also played volleyball at Southeastern, leading the Pirates to a 17-5 record during her senior season. “Mya is a player with tremendous upside whose best days are yet to come,” said Hancock. “She is an athletic player with good size that can impact a game in a variety of ways. It will be important for her to increase her strength and learn how to use her athleticism to her advantage at the college level. Mya will help us compete with some of the more athletic teams that we face.” The Seahawks (4-2) return to action Sunday when they host long-time rival East Carolina in a 4 p.m. contest at Trask Coliseum. -- Jesse Jones, CAPE FEAR SPORTS REPORT N.C.
