Homeless veterans received special attention today at the American Legion post in Wilmington.

The Tri-County Homeless Interagency hosted the ninth annual Homeless Veterans Standdown.

Homeless vets and others enjoyed breakfast, lunch and a variety of other free services.

Veteran Shannon McGill was once homeless, and he said similar services have helped him get back on his feet.

"It felt good to know that I was able to get help and that there was facilities and people there to help me, to get me back where I needed to be," said McGill.

Free long distance calls were one of the perks today.

The hope was that people would reconnect with other vets, friends and family for the holiday weekend.

Signs of a selfish world

Veterans, that defended our country, get "free long distance calls" as a perk? These people should be able to have free housing let alone free long distance! We live in a very backwards, selfish world when ANY Veteran is homeless. Shame on us.
