The highway patrol said a veteran trooper was injured Tuesday when a small truck hit him as he stopped to assist a motorist.

The accident occurred in Garner. The trooper was hit by a pickup truck that was going in the opposite direction. The driver told Garner Police he skidded, lost control of his pickup and then slid into the trooper and his state police cruiser.

Police said the steady snow that began Monday, and lasted into mid-morning, made driving conditions hazardous.

The trooper is being treated at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh.
