Cooper sends letter to Myspace about sex offenders

RALEIGH (AP) -- Attorney General Roy Cooper is escalating his fight against sex offenders on the Internet.

Cooper sent a letter to popular social networking site Myspace.com Monday asking the company to give him the names of any registered sex offenders who use the site. The letter is signed by attorneys general from seven other states.

Cooper says law enforcement across the country has found more than 100 cases where children were lured by predators they met on Myspace.

Cooper and the other chief prosecutors want to know how many Myspace members have been identified as sex offenders. They also want to know what steps the company plans to take.

Myspace's policy prevents children under 14 from setting up profiles. But it relies on users to specify their ages.
