Programmable thermostats can lower cooling bills

It can be hard to find a happy medium. You return home from work to a boiling house, or your energy bill is through the roof because you leave the A.C. on all day.

But, if you have a programmable thermostat, you can keep cool and save money.

Experts say people waste money and energy by keeping their cooling units active while they are out.

With a programmable thermostat, an attic fan, and regular cleaning of air filters, residents can see big savings on their energy bills.

Marty Kalnen , Air Flow Mechanical, said, "All these things can make your cooling bill a whole lot cheaper. You can probably save 20 to 30 percent if you have all of these things in your favor."

Not all electrical thermostats are programmable.

For thermostats to work effectively filters must be cleaned on a regular basis.

Ceiling fans should be set on reverse to help circulate the cool air throughout a home.

Basic programmable thermostats cost about $100, not including installation, but the Environmental Protection Agency estimates they can save you about $180 a year.
