From nicotine patches, to gum, to lozenges, there are many tools out there to help smokers kick the habit, but little research has been done comparing how well these products work. But a new study from the University of Wisconsin has found that pairing the nicotine patch with nicotine lozenges, as needed, is the best aid for those trying to kick the habit.

In the study, over 1,500 smokers who were motivated to quit were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of treatment with one or a combination of the following: nicotine patch, nicotine lozenge, bupropion, an antidepressant that reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms, or a placebo. Smoking rates were assessed after one week, 8 weeks, and 6 months after the quit date.

Researchers found that pairing nicotine lozenges with the nicotine patch was the only treatment they tested which worked better than placebo at 6 months. Those using this treatment were also more likely than other participants to have quit at 7 days, and they showed a longer period of time before relapsing.

This research suggests that using additional treatments that can be used as needed, when cravings come on, such as gum or lozenges, alongside the patch is the best plan for smokers trying to quit.

they will come ...

..up with anything to try an make money or get people to spend money on stuff that doesnot work i have tried it all an my honest opinion if someone wants to quit they have to want to quit an they can do it on their own only if they want to i smoked for almost 20 years an when i finally desided to quit i did

It is different for everyone......

Everyone has different levels of addiction to nicotine and have different ways of dealing with it. The biggest thing on my side was my "desire" to quit. I really wanted to put them down, I did it and am smoke free for almost 5 yrs now. I got into fitness shortly after quitting, realized how bad of shape I was in and it was a huge motivator to get my wind, stamina and strength back.

Now...my poor mom. Had a heart attack, put in 3 stints, simultaneously diagnosed with emphysema. Still smoking...says she just can't stop. She will...sooner than she thinks.

Smoke Free

I smoked for over ten years at a pack a day and here's how I stopped......me,myself and I!!! If you want to stop you will and that's that! I was sick of killing myself and I wanted to see my kids become adults. I've been smoke free for over one year now. Yes it was VERY hard but if you are serious you will do it!

not as good as e-cigs

I've done the lozenges-&-patch approach for almost 7 months with no success. (Or very LITTLE success.) Honestly, the only thing that has worked for me is smoking whitecloudecigoutlet.com. I haven't used tobacco cigarettes in over a year, and I'm now weening myself off of e-cigarettes as well.

I just think smokers need to be more realistic about trying to stop using tobacco. It has been know for a long time that lozenges and patches are not effective for most smokers.

Smoking cessation

Nicorette Microtabs, 2 mg. sublingual are very effective as well. Currently 9 months smoke free, after being a 50 year consumer.

I found the perfect method to quit twelve years ago

Self-discipline

You just dont know ol Common....

You just dont know ol Common. Apparently he is one of the greatest human beings alive. He has complete self-control, is by far the best parent (raising a military general and a police captain or whatever), has never even been tempted to cheat or steal or over-consume anything. He is, according to his posts (which he writes about 50 a day) the single greatest man to ever walk the planet.

You left out healing lepers...

...and multiplying loaves and fishes.

Glad you appreciate my efforts.

Don't forget to add that his

Don't forget to add that his political opinions are also the word of God...he thinks he is the Moses of politics.

Thanks for that observation

You can never even imagine the thrill I get from you whining liberals crying about my adherence to the Constitution, Capitalism, and common sense.

Run along now, and face toward Washington for your Noon prayers.

It does get old

But common, the whining of the libs does get old after awhile. I'd prefer they just left the country like some promised to do after George W. Bush won the second time. Yet another promise broken by the left.

Sounds to me like you've

Sounds to me like you've never been a smoker. Of course you would think that if you've never felt that gnawing feeling of addiction. Stopping smoking was the hardest thing I have ever done. I tried every thing. Smoked for 26+ years and finally kicked it after using the gum for a year. Now smoke free for going on 5 years. I truly resent the folks who say: just stop or "Self discipline".

Sounds to me like you've

Obviously you are one of the many people who require a quick fix from someone else to be able to quit. Many people have quit on their own with outside help. I smoked for 19 years and was up to 2 1/2 packs a day when I quit without the help you think everyone needs. I haven't smoked since March of 1989. so don't assume that just because people don't quit the same way you did that they have never smoked.

EXACTLY

Exactly!! Everyone quits in a different way. No one person deals with things in the same way another does. So, let's stop criticizing each other for the method of quitting and keep the focus on stopping smoking. It is, like many other things, an addiction and whatever method you use to stop.....well, so be it and congratulations for your accoplishment. It all still requires self discipline, but getting some help to get you there should not be shamed. This is a personal battle.

Two packs of Lucky Strike a day...

...for twenty-seven years: First thing in the morning, last thing at night.

I tossed a half-pack and my Zippo on the coffee table on a Saturday night in April of 1997. I finished that last butt, crushed it out, and went to bed.

Six months later I put the Zippo away and threw a very stale half-pack of Luckies away.

Was it easy? Of course not. Nothing worth doing is.

Common Common

Common...don't' you KNOW...you NEED the government for this type of help...YOU NEED THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES for this sort of thing...SILLY AMERICAN! You can't do things on your OWN!

Wussies

I quit the week my father died of cancer after smoking for 15 years. If you wussies would get over your lousy excuses and get some self discipline you could do the same. I am sick of hearing all the excuses of weak willed, lazy people who don't even try. Some of you would rather sue McDonald's because it is their fault you are fat. Pulease. Give me a break. Grow up, stop being lazy, stop making excuses. Take responsibility for your life. It all boils down to CHOICES.
