Restaurant Review: Smiley’s Family Diner!

Remember where the “new” Paul’s Place used to be? Right there off of I-40, on 210 at the Rocky Point exit? That sounds like hillbilly directions if I ever heard ‘em!
Anyway, Paul’s Place decided to be a singular location again and now, in their place is SMILEY’S!

It’s family owned and it is simply good ole’ family, kuntry cookin.

Feel like something tasty and greasy but not wanting to stand in line at Goody Goody or Dixie? Slap on a ball cap and hop in the car. It’s only about 15 minutes up the road and it’s worth it!

Breakfast and lunch are yummy. You gotcher velvety- soft, fat pole beans cooked to death with a bit o’ ham hock, flat top fried burgers with soft steamed buns and a different special every day for lunch! I had chicken and pastry with the aforementioned beans and slightly sweet and gritty corn muffin.

The hush puppies are crispy and brown on the outside, moist and hot and thick on the inside. The chopped barbecue was excellent. I was thrilled because, well for reasons we won’t go into I no longer frequent Jackson’s. It was very flavorful with the right bit of smoke and vinegar. Sweet Tea is SuperSouthernSweet, just right with their menu selections. Thursdays offer fried pork chops, yes please! They have great homemade potato salad, bright yellow with mustard and just the right hints of sweet relish.
The drive from Wilmington to Raleigh is no longer a fast food wasteland! Hallelujah!
I’d just skip the sweets. While really inexpensive the pound cake isn’t worth it when you could have gotten an extra side of somethin’ fried instead. (Lucky you! A food write up and some cultural poetry!!!)

Just remember, oh suburbanites, you are in the country, people are kind and friendly and not always in a hurry, so BE NICE and POLITE when you go! These folks are working their behinds off and are just getting started, so take a big appetite and zero expectations of anything fancy or vegan! It fit me just right for a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Let’s give em a minute on dinner. They haven’t been open too terribly long. I’m going next week -- I’ll let you know.

Rocky Point Rebels, re: Hillbilly and Review

It would be more effective if your "comments" as locals made sense! There were no disparaging remarks in this review towards R.P. or the residents! She's making fun of the DRIVING DIRECTIONS! Also, if you did graduate from college you would probably know the difference between "your" and "you're." Oddly enough, you sound like the snobby bigot by making fun of people who live in trailers, something she didn't do. Blondie is celebrating the country and trying to help a small restaurant make it, which is hard! And, she must "get out" sometimes if she went there and did a favorable review. It's not condescending, it's funny. Why tout the growth a wonderful small town and try to encourage more fast food and huge buildings when that's what people value about the location in the first place??? Peace, quiet and not a lot of traffic. The family is happy they got free publicity talkin' about how good the food is. Try to get the big chips off your shoulders.

This is a restaurant review????

WOW that has to be the most condescending restaurant review I have ever read!! Well, in a backhanded way I suppose Bistro Blonde liked the restaurant, but was it really necessary to trash Rocky Point in the process?? She needs to get out more...R.P. is a thriving, growing town with many different types of people, and the vast majority of us DO have all our teeth!;)

LOL food review

BTW: I HAVE ALL MY TEETH TOO and they are not rotten !! Hahaha

Hillbilly

Welcome to Rocky Point, we feel so special that you made the trip out here.(sarcasm in case your not picking it up) Just to let you know Blondie that not everyone that resides in Rocky Point is a hillbilly. Some of us actually graduated from high school and college and make upwards of 100K a year. We live out of town by choice in nice neighborhoods (not trailer parks). It is quiet, safe (at this point) and the lack of traffic lights is a plus.

I am pleased that you enjoyed your food but, you wont be seeing us there, we don't all eat fried food and over cooked vegetables.

One more thing: The drive to Raleigh is approximately 113 miles. Rocky Point is only 12 miles from Wilmington so unless you plan on stopping after only 12 miles to eat @ Smiley's it isn't really considered "on the road" to Raleigh.

Re:teeth and Raleigh

I must not read very well, cuz' I don't see a reference to teeth in the review. Also, how many times do you eat on the way to Raleigh? The other funny thing is, I didn't realize you had to be a certain distance from a destination to be considered "on the way." I have learned so much from "Zippy." The nickname must come from the dazzling comebacks and wide knowledge of punctuation, economics, mileage and housing!

smileys

I was adding a comment to the last replier.

I do not see how you can read that review and not see it as a little slam. She had to get into "kuntry" mode with her "kuntry" misspelled words? We are not county and most people I know do not speak that way. She said Smiley's food is tasty and greasy. Greasy is a negative aspect to me and most people think of greasy food as rather nasty. Saying food is cooked to death doesn't sound too great for the restaurant either.

I was not slamming Smiley's except that we do not eat fried food or vegetables cooked "to death".

We are a long way from Raleigh, 12 miles/10 min. from Wilmington......long drive after you pass here, don't you think?

Glad I amuse you.
