Stamp Out Hunger

Its seems like a normal day for mail carrier Nicholas Gates, but this Saturday morning, as he drops off and picks up mail, he's looking for something other than letters and magazines.

"Well today we are picking up canned goods and non-perishable food items from residents of Wilmington and the surrounding areas.

It's for the 16th annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive. Local letter carriers from the U.S Postal Service work with local food banks to help feed those who are hungry this mother's day.

And helping out is easy, when Nick and other carriers deliver mail, they pick up food items residents leave by their mailboxes. They then put them in their trucks and deliver them to food banks.

John Cowans is a local U.S. Postal Service Branch President, and he says, nearly one hundred thousand children in the U.S. go to bed hungry each night, a number of those children are right here in Wilmington.

"We see these children, every single day, and it gives us a chance to give something back to the community, this is our way of doing it. We are out there, we can pick the food up, all they have to do again is just put it on the mailbox."

"Its definitely for a great cause, it helps out the food bank here in Wilmington, all the food stays local, its really a great thing to do, and a great opportunity for the postal service to help out."
