Andy Scherr joined Newschannel 3 in August of 2007 after earning a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Columbia University.
After only a few months at the station, he was named 2007 "Rookie of the Year" by the North Carolina Associated Press.
Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Andy discovered his passion for journalism after he graduated Cum Laude from Tulane University with a degree in English and Spanish in 2004. Without any experience, he moved back to Baltimore and began pitching story ideas to local publications.
He quickly earned positions as a part time staff reporter at the Baltimore Jewish Times, contributor to other local publications including Baltimore and Urbanite magazines and editor of a monthly e-newsletter for a national non-profit organization. His fluency in Spanish and interest in Latin culture also led him to become co-host of local public radio show Fiesta Musical, which features classic salsa and Latin jazz.
Andy transitioned to broadcast journalism in graduate school where he reported and produced packages on various topics for a weekly student newscast. He also co-produced a student documentary about baseball in the Dominican Republic.
When he is not chasing down news stories, Andy enjoys movies, exercising, reading, and being outside. He is thrilled to be on the Carolina coast where the weather is beautiful and the people are friendly. He loves meeting members of the Wilmington community and hearing their stories.
